Kolkata – The Cultural Capital of India

Kolkata is the capital of the state of West Bengal. Famously known as the “City of Joy”, Kolkata has been declared as the Cultural Capital of India over the years due to its unique art, literature, and culture.


Kolkata is renowned for its literary works which draw inspiration from its rich history, heritage, and culture. Notable literates such as Rabindranath Tagore, Michael Madhusudan Dutta, Kazi Nazrul Islam, Bankim Chandra Chatterjee, and Sarat Chandra Chatterjee have truly enriched Kolkata’s literary world, making it the cultural capital of India.

Music and Theatre

Kolkata is widely known for its melodious music and theatrical performance. Various kinds of music, classical, semi-classical, folk, orchestral have been practiced and produced by some of the most talented maestros in India. Popular music directors such as Bappi Lahiri, Late-Pandit Ravi Shankar and Soumitra Ray, to name a few, got their break from the city of Kolkata.

Some of the world’s best artists, such as Jamini Roy, Rabindranath Tagore, and Abanindranath Tagore found appreciation in the city. The city boast of an unique and vibrant art tradition, which can be witnessed in the many galleries and art centers in the city.


Kolkata has some of the most amazing and mouth-watering dishes which are exported worldwide. Some of the city’s well known delicacies include:

  • Shondesh: A special type of sweet made from milk and sugar.
  • Macher Jhol: Fish cooked in a gravy of mustard paste, potatoes, ginger, and tomato.
  • Kosha Mangsho: Spicy mutton curry with potatoes and onion.
  • Chocolate Sandesh: Special type of sweet made from milk, sugar, and cocoa powder.

Kolkata’s culture is a beautiful amalgamation of literature, music, theatre, cinema, art, and cuisine all blended together, making it the Cultural Capital of India.
