Thailand Adds Fee for Foreign Tourists

Thailand is rolling out a new fee that foreign tourists visiting the country will need to pay. The fee, part of the country’s efforts to boost its tourism industry while generating additional income.

How Much is the Fee?

Tourists who fly into Thailand will be subject to the fee and the amount depends on their length of stay. The applicable fees will be:

  • 2,000 Baht for stays up to 15 days
  • 5,000 Baht for stays between 16 and 30 days
  • 10,000 Baht for longer stays up to 90 days

The fee includes travel insurance that covers medical costs and loss of valuables for the duration of their stay.

What Does the Fee Cover?

The fee is meant to partially cover for the cost of medical and security services for visitors in the country, making Thailand a safer and more secure place for visitors throughout the period of their stay.

The government has statued that the remaining cost of medical and security services will be borne by the government.

When Does It Take Effect?

The fee is expected to kick in in April 2021. It is understood that this will be in time for the high tourist season in Thailand.

Tourists who have already book flights to Thailand before April 2021 will not be required to pay the fee.

How to Pay the Fee?

The fee will be collected via airlines at the point of entry and will be reflected in the ticket price. Payment can be made via credit card, debit card or other acceptable payment methods.


The fee for foreign tourists is expected to bring significant benefits to Thailand’s tourism industry. It is seen as a way to promote safe and secure tourist experience, while providing additional income to the government.

The fee is expected to take effect in April 2021 and foreign tourists who plan to visit Thailand from then on will need to factor this fee into their cost of visitation.
